Typically, if you struggle with any of the following, you will be recommended to receive oral conscious sedation:

  • You have moderate dental anxiety that makes it hard for you to receive oral healthcare.
  • You struggle with having instruments in your mouth because of a sensitive gag reflex.
  • You have trouble getting numb with other forms of anesthesia or sedation.
  • You have suffered past dental trauma at another dentist’s office.
  • You require multiple treatments to be completed in a single appointment.

How Does Oral Conscious Sedation Work?

Oral conscious sedation is administered in pill form and is to be taken at a designated time before your appointment.

Once ingested, it will take some time for the effects to kick in, but you’ll need to have someone escort you to your appointment as well as drive you home. By the time you reach the treatment chair, you will likely feel groggy or even fall asleep; however, Dr. Tran and our team will be able to easily wake you if communication is required.

Throughout treatment, you won’t feel much of anything, and you can expect to not remember much from your appointment after you return home. Since it takes time for the effects to wear off, you should plan to spend the rest of the day at home.
